SmartCards Expo was launched in 1999 by Electronics Today, India's first Techno-Economic Electronics Monthly Journal and the Pioneer in organizing Electronics/IT exhibitions in India since 1969. Prior to this, Electronics Today had organised , for the first time in India, an International Conference on Smart Card Technology and Applications in 1997 at Mumbai and in 1998 at Bangalore. The only smart card application at that time was SIM card in Mobile telephone, introduced in the country in 1995. Electronics Today and SmartCards Expo have spearheaded Smart Card Revolution in India. With the growing technology trends, SmartCards Expo was joined by RFIDIndia Expo in 2005, BiometricsIndia Expo (2007), e-Payments India Expo and Mobile Forum of India (2008). All these events are now co-located with SmartCards Expo under one roof
